A man who fights to save his country and its existence deserves great respect a war monger deserves nothing.
A king is a king is a King these days, it is not exactly The Old Ottoman Empire of the 1400's or King Harold of 1066 etc, Kings of the last 150 years have simply enjoyed being Kings and have had little Influence apart from Kowtowing to their army or accepting the flow of power around them The King of Saudi Arabia will get tears too but what has he done or his family done apart from accept British and American assistance and regulations for over 100 years ?.

So a man who kept his country out of a war is somehow better than a man who dragged his people into one?

You should have stuck with GTA and left reality to the grown ups.

I'm not an expert on this, but I'd be very surprised if many gay men went on the raz with their wife in tow.

Re: King of Thailand
Sorry but mourning for an 88 year old man and a very rich king at that, like you have just lost your beautiful 5 year old child (God forbid) is for me abhorrent and shows the lack of character of the Thai people, the pictures of the people crying madly for this ridiculously rich man who never fought or lead his country in any war or did anything much more than ride along through his countries history whilst sitting on billions of pounds makes the Lady Diana mourning we had here look dignified and very normal .

Re: King of Thailand
If you lot think Prince Charles is bad you should see the son of Thailand's king returning back to his country from holiday dressed like a very very camp gay man out on the raz, with wife and poodle in tow.

I suspect the most profound changes will be various people jostling for power in what will certainly be a (local moral) vacuum.

Expect many more "illogical" edicts from the government as the elite play snakes & ladders in the corridors of power.

Ferangs (& other foreigners) are a soft target in this respect as ministers and generals can be seen to "be doing something" when a problem arises without affecting the locals too much - we're about due for another round of seemingly pointless visa/long stay rule changes anyway, none of which ever make any sense until you unravel the politics behind them.

The last lot, for instance, making life a bit more difficult to obtain visas longer than 2/3 months were all down to a senior member of the administration throwing a hissy fit all because one of his peers made a suggestion to their superiors he felt it was his duty/right to make and lost a lot of face.

That and the fact that the suggestion significantly altered a major cash-flow route in the government, and hence the people able to fish in it.

Don't get me wrong there will be a lot of changes behind the scenes and the country has now entered into an uncertain, unchartered period that could and most likely will effect Thai's and long term expats for good or for bad, but after the initial 30 day period with limited entertainment etc, it will just seem the same to tourists ref everyday life..

''I'm looking to get back out there in January for a few weeks, do you reckon things would have got back to normality?''

It's pretty much normal out there TODAY, let alone in January. Yes many people (not all) are genuinely sad, but the whole country was never going to come grinding to a halt for 6 monts, like some predicted. Times have changed here over recent years and people have to and will get back to normal very quickly.

I was walking along in Lumpini Park in Bangkok in the late afternoon a couple of years ago. It was really lovely to see the Thais at play, rowing around on the boating lake, playing a bit of tennis and most of all, all the old people having a massive Tai Chi session.

Suddenly at exactly 6pm the Thai national anthem starts blaring out through the loudspeakers and every single person in the park (including me) simply stopped what they were doing and stood up straight as if to attention, the people in the boats stopped rowing and sat up straight.

Then after about a minute the anthem stopped and everyone simply picked up from where they'd left off. Nobody commented on it and you might have thought you'd imagined it. For a minute though it was like the world stopped.

You would never really imagine it but the Thais seem to be an incredibly patriotic nation and they loved their king very much. I was watching TV and the news was reporting him visiting a hospital and as he turned a corner with his entourage EVERYONE, nurses, doctors and even patients threw themselves on the floor and laid on there on their stomachs like he was a God and they were unworthy. It was very impressive.

I'm guessing his death is going to sting a lot of people.

Just saw that soi Cowboy is open already, but without the music outside and less neon. I expect everything will shut again on the day of his funeral, which could be months away.

Having been there many times and spoken to many Thai people over the years, the thing I find interesting is the grief being shown by many Thai people on our news reports, will be completely genuine.

On TV it will look a lot like the 'required grief' shown by the North Koreans, but this will be what they really feel.
